Hello
Conveners
Just a brief note to confirm the announcement made at the November meeting
in Belvoir that as from January it is proposed that the U3A interest
groups will provide tea-making teams in rotation for the monthly meetings.
The idea is that, whereas in the past the same small group of people
have been asked to do the needful, this way (which is practiced in other
U3A branches) will spread the load more widely and therefore more fairly.
In the case of the smaller groups, they can combine to produce a team
from two groups at a time, rather than from just one group. The necessary
supplies will be provided as usual, so all that is required is for the
designated team to put in about an hour's duty prior to the start of
the meeting. With the numbers we currently have attending the monthly
meetings, the minimum number for a team would be 4 but 5 is probably
better.
I hope no-one will feel any worry or unease about this arrangement.
No-one needs to take any action until I get in touch, and there will
be plenty of help as regards showing newcomers the ropes.

NOTICE
TO AMBLERS
Veronica Browne has kindly agreed to become the new Convener for the
Amblers Group as from February 2012. We wish her well in her new role
and thank her predecessor, Margaret Mathews, ably assisted by Anna and
Mina, for their contributions over the past three years. Throughout
January 2012 the Amblers will meet each Thursday (except 26th Jan.)

day.

NAME
BADGES
As the ‘book’ system is no longer practical due to our increasing
membership, members will in future keep their own badges to wear at
the monthly meetings. If you have not already done so, please retrieve
your badge from Margaret Campbell at a meeting. Recent members, who
have not yet been issued with badges and would like one, should either
sign the sheet at the monthly meeting or contact our Membership Secretary.

Traveling
in Europe?
GET AN EHIC CARD
The European Health Insurance Card [www.ehic.org.uk]
costs nothing to obtain and entitles holders to free or reduced-cost
state-provided medical treatment in many European countries. Though
no substitute for full travel insurance, it’s still worth having,
not least because many insurers waive the excess on a medical claim
if you use the card.
Further
Oldies
heading to Europe might also want to consider EHICPlus [0845 055 5222,
www.ehicplus.com]. A top-up policy
for those with an EHIC card, it covers all costs for treatment in a
state-run hospital, along with private ambulances and repatriation to
the UK, and the usual non-medical stuff on a travel insurance policy
such as possessions and cancellations.
As it does not cover treatment in a private hospital, the policy is
more limited than normal travel insurance, but it is very affordable
for pensioners – an annual policy for someone over 70 costs just
£40 and has no upper age limit.
Traveling
Further Afield?
SHOP
AROUND IF YOU’RE OLDER
Finding affordable travel insurance when you reach your 70s can be a
challenge. Annual worldwide policies in particular can be astronomically
expensive [though you can sometimes cut premiums significantly by excluding
cover for travel to North America].
Prices with general insurers are often lower than with companies specialising
in services for the elderly. One exception, which crops up in several
of the Which? “best buy” tables, is In tune [0800 022 3192,
www.intunegroup.co.uk], a
subsidiary of Help the Aged, whose policies have no upper age limit.
Single-trip policies with Egg [0845 122 2888, www.egg.com]
which insures those up to 85, and Virgin Money [0800 051 7000 www.virginmoney.co.uk],
which imposes no upper age limit, can also be competitively priced.
