The
next Peoples History Initiative lecture to be delivered in collaboration
with the SS Nomadic Trust,
‘Beef,
Bananas and Emigrants’
takes
place at
The Belfast Barge at 10.30am on Friday 9th December 2011.
Dr John Lynch,
the author of An Unlikely Success Story: Shipbuilding in Belfast,
will explore ‘Beef, Bananas & Emigrants’: A lecture
examining how shifts in world trade and consumption patterns transformed
the output of the Belfast shipyards 1880-1930.
The Belfast
barge is located on the River Lagan, behind the Waterfront Hall, Belfast.

The Ulster Peoples College is pleased to announce that it is delivering
the Peoples History Initiative programme in collaboration with the SS
Nomadic Trust until December 2013.
The programme will include:
Introductory Courses on key events in Irish history, courses which support
groups in telling the story of their own community in the form of an
exhibition or a book, lectures and workshops.
Introduction
to Peoples History Courses:
This short introductory course facilitate participants in learning more
about key events in history and in discussing what these events mean
for them. The courses will also introduce participants to the skills
required to explore the past such as; examining the same historical
event from different perspectives; using different materials to look
at history and critical exploration of history. The course is 7 sessions,
each session is 2 hours.
Groups
can take up Introduction to Peoples History Course 1 and then they have
the opportunity to follow on to Introduction to Peoples History Course
2:
Introduction
to Peoples History 1 – Battle of the Somme and the Easter Rising.
Participants will learn more about how Nationalism and Unionism developed,
the involvement of soldiers from Nationalist and Unionist Communities
in Ireland in World War One, the Easter Rising, the Battle of the Somme,
the Partition of Ireland and the formation of the Irish Free State and
Northern Ireland. A range of perspectives on key events will be explored
.Introduction
to Peoples History 2 – this is a follow on course from
Introduction to Peoples History 1 – the Battle of the Somme and
the Easter Rising. The group will explore the period from Partition
to Sunningdale, examining key ideas such as ‘state’, ‘nation’,
constitution and identity; a range of perspectives on key events will
be explored.
Peoples
History Exhibition/Book Course
Participants will have the opportunity to collect information and discuss
the theme they have chosen. Delivery of these courses in collaboration
with the SS Nomadic Trust place an emphasis on communities of interest
and exploring the social, economic and labour history of greater Belfast
and beyond.
Participants will learn how to study old photographs and newspapers,
how to interview people and collect their stories and how to use other
resources to find out about the past.
Participants will learn how to present the information of the history
of their choice in exhibition or book form. This exhibition or book
can then be launched locally before being displayed in the Peoples Museum
space when it is open to the public.
The course also allows participants reflect on their findings about
the past and use this in future plans for their community. This course
is 12 sessions, each session is 2 hours. The book course requires a
number of follow on editing sessions.
It
is accredited at OCN Level 2. Shared History Exhibitions
Peoples
History Initiative will work with groups to use a Peoples History
Approach to explore and present the stories of how different communities
have come to live in Belfast with a focus on their working lives and
experiences. Do any groups in your community want to work together to
collect their stories, exhibit them locally and then add them to the
materials to be displayed onboard the SS Nomadic?
Lectures
and Workshops
A range of lectures and workshops delivered by Dr John Lynch will support
this initiative. All participant groups will be welcome to sign up for
these lectures and workshops.

BADGES
As the ‘book’ system is no longer practical due to our increasing
membership, members will in future keep their own badges to wear at
the monthly meetings. If you have not already done so, please retrieve
your badge from Margaret Cambell at a meeting. Recent members, who have
not yet been issued with badges and would like one, should either sign
the sheet at the monthly meeting or contact our Membership Secretary.
