The Ulster Peoples College is pleased to announce that it is delivering the Peoples History Initiative programme in collaboration with the SS Nomadic Trust until December 2013.

The programme will include:

Introductory Courses on key events in Irish history, courses which support groups in telling the story of their own community in the form of an exhibition or a book, lectures and workshops.

Introduction to Peoples History Courses:
This short introductory course facilitate participants in learning more about key events in history and in discussing what these events mean for them. The courses will also introduce participants to the skills required to explore the past such as; examining the same historical event from different perspectives; using different materials to look at history and critical exploration of history. The course is 7 sessions, each session is 2 hours.

Groups can take up Introduction to Peoples History Course 1 and then they have the opportunity to follow on to Introduction to Peoples History Course 2:

Introduction to Peoples History 1 – Battle of the Somme and the Easter Rising.
Participants will learn more about how Nationalism and Unionism developed, the involvement of soldiers from Nationalist and Unionist Communities in Ireland in World War One, the Easter Rising, the Battle of the Somme, the Partition of Ireland and the formation of the Irish Free State and Northern Ireland. A range of perspectives on key events will be explored

.Introduction to Peoples History 2 – this is a follow on course from Introduction to Peoples History 1 – the Battle of the Somme and the Easter Rising. The group will explore the period from Partition to Sunningdale, examining key ideas such as ‘state’, ‘nation’, constitution and identity; a range of perspectives on key events will be explored.

Peoples History Exhibition/Book Course
Participants will have the opportunity to collect information and discuss the theme they have chosen. Delivery of these courses in collaboration with the SS Nomadic Trust place an emphasis on communities of interest and exploring the social, economic and labour history of greater Belfast and beyond.
Participants will learn how to study old photographs and newspapers, how to interview people and collect their stories and how to use other resources to find out about the past.
Participants will learn how to present the information of the history of their choice in exhibition or book form. This exhibition or book can then be launched locally before being displayed in the Peoples Museum space when it is open to the public.
The course also allows participants reflect on their findings about the past and use this in future plans for their community. This course is 12 sessions, each session is 2 hours. The book course requires a number of follow on editing sessions.

It is accredited at OCN Level 2. Shared History Exhibitions

Peoples History Initiative will work with groups to use a Peoples History Approach to explore and present the stories of how different communities have come to live in Belfast with a focus on their working lives and experiences. Do any groups in your community want to work together to collect their stories, exhibit them locally and then add them to the materials to be displayed onboard the SS Nomadic?

Lectures and Workshops
A range of lectures and workshops delivered by Dr John Lynch will support this initiative. All participant groups will be welcome to sign up for these lectures and workshops.

As the ‘book’ system is no longer practical due to our increasing membership, members will in future keep their own badges to wear at the monthly meetings. If you have not already done so, please retrieve your badge from Margaret Cambell at a meeting. Recent members, who have not yet been issued with badges and would like one, should either sign the sheet at the monthly meeting or contact our Membership Secretary.
