February Newsletter

We followed up on the skills we learned at the Workshop in January. Our library Tutor, Martha Ann, sent me some Quiz sheets to help us practice search skills. We tackled the first one: Oxford Reference. It was a really enjoyable exercise.

After the break we searched Biographies and Art for people we are interested in.
We had a look at a calendar I had done online and looked at our January Newsletter which was written by Marie Burns. Thanks, Maria. I think a Newsletter is a great idea.

March 28th we will be investigating sending ecards, i.e. greeting cards sent by email. They are great fun to send and receive.

Diary and CommentarySilver Surfers’ Taster Day
1st June 2011 at Laganview Business Centre, Lisburn
.

Spring Online with Silver Surfers’ Day is a National Campaign to assist older people in understanding the ‘Digital Age’. We had a tremendous response to our Silver Surfers’ Taster Day, far surpassing our greatest expectations.  A team of ‘Buddies’ was on hand to assist beginners through to experienced participants with queries and problems relating to a variety of topics including:
Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, E-mail, Internet, Skype, Sat Nav, and Digital Photography.

So, participants were assisted for example, in using a mouse and keyboard, sending e-mails, shopping online, booking flights, phoning for free and uploading photos from digital cameras to computers.
Due to demand, we issued time slots of 30 minutes to each person and this worked well. It also allowed participants, once their session was complete, to wait and return later for a further 30 minute session, if they so wished. We had a ratio of 1’Buddy’ per 1 or 2 participants and with the Computer Suite full to capacity, the ‘buzz’ and ‘chat’ were tremendous.

Thanks are due to Eileen Deane, Lorna White and Muriel Patterson who worked tirelessly through the morning, providing much needed refreshments. Unfortunately, because of catering demand they were unable to avail of any computer sessions for themselves

Special thanks to Marie Mullan who was the driving force behind this event and to Lena McCann,  whose organisational skills were exceptional.
Many thanks are due also to all ‘Buddies’ who gave so willingly of their time and expertise andwithout whom the ‘Event’ could not have taken place.
Let’s hope our ‘Silver Surfers’ are using their improved skills and still happily Surfing the Net  Stephanie McKenna
